St. Adelaide was born in 931 into the royal family of Burgundy. Married at a young age to the King of Italy, she was widowed and imprisoned during a time of political turmoil. Enduring suffering with faith, she eventually escaped and later married Otto the Great, Holy Roman Emperor, becoming Empress of the Holy Roman Empire. Known for her wisdom, charity, and devotion to God, Adelaide used her influence to build monasteries, support the Church, and promote peace in a fractured Europe. After Otto’s death, she served as regent for her grandson and continued to be a guiding force of faith and stability. She died in 999 and was canonized for her holiness and leadership, remembered as a model of Christian queenship.
Practical Lessons
- Persevere Through Trials: Adelaide endured imprisonment, loss, and betrayal, yet she remained steadfast in faith. In our lives, this reminds us to cling to God during hardship and trust His providence even when circumstances seem hopeless.
- Use Influence for Good: As empress, Adelaide used her position to build up the Church and serve the poor. Whether in leadership at work, in family, or in community, we too can use our influence to uplift others and advance what is good.
- Promote Peace and Unity: Adelaide worked to bring reconciliation and stability to a divided empire. In our daily lives, we can promote peace by forgiving quickly, reconciling with others, and choosing words that build rather than divide.
Prayer
St. Adelaide, faithful empress and servant of Christ, intercede for us that we may persevere in trials, use our gifts and influence for good, and be peacemakers in our families and communities. Pray that we may always place Christ at the center of our lives and serve Him with generosity and love. Amen.
Quote
“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called children of God.”—(Matthew 5:9)
