Blessed Juvenal Ancina was born in 1545 in Fossano, Italy. Gifted in both academics and music, he studied medicine and became a physician before discerning a call to the priesthood. His life changed when he heard the preaching of St. Philip Neri in Rome. Deeply moved, he left behind his successful medical career to join the Congregation of the Oratory, where he was formed in a life of prayer, community, and service. Ordained a priest, Juvenal became known as a powerful preacher and a skilled spiritual director. His eloquence and pastoral care inspired many to return to the sacraments and live faithfully. Later, Pope Clement VIII appointed him Bishop of Saluzzo, where he worked tirelessly to reform the clergy, promote catechesis, and care for the poor. Known for his humility and dedication, he remained deeply committed to the people entrusted to him. Blessed Juvenal Ancina died in 1604, leaving behind the witness of a life wholly given to God in both the Oratory and his episcopal ministry.
Practical Lessons
- Use Your Talents for God: Blessed Juvenal left a successful medical career to serve Christ. In modern life, we can ask how our talents—whether professional skills, artistic gifts, or personal strengths—can be used to serve God and help others.
- Stay Rooted in Community: As an Oratorian, Juvenal lived and prayed in community before becoming a bishop. Today, this reminds us not to isolate ourselves spiritually. Staying connected with a parish, prayer group, or supportive faith community can strengthen us in living out our faith.
- Prioritize Pastoral Care: As bishop, Juvenal focused on teaching the faith and caring for the poor. For us, this can mean mentoring someone younger, volunteering at a local parish, or helping neighbors in need—small ways to live a spirit of care and service.
Prayer
Blessed Juvenal Ancina, you who turned from worldly success to follow Christ with humility and zeal, pray for us. Help us to use our gifts in service of God and neighbor, to remain faithful in our communities, and to live with compassion for all. Intercede for us, that we may grow in holiness and bring others closer to Christ. Amen.
