The Seven Holy Founders of the Order of Servites—Sts. Bonfilius, Bonajuncta, Manettus, Amideus, Hugh, Sostene, and Alexis—were born in the late twelfth and early thirteenth centuries in Florence, Italy. Coming from prosperous merchant families, they were deeply devoted to the Blessed Virgin Mary and sought to live a life apart from the distractions of wealth and worldly honor. In 1233, they withdrew from their business affairs and dedicated themselves to prayer, penance, and service, forming a small community on Monte Senario. There, under Mary’s inspiration, they founded the Order of the Servants of Mary (Servites), with a special devotion to Our Lady of Sorrows. They lived lives of simplicity, fraternity, and charity, emphasizing prayer and service to the poor. Over time, their community grew into a religious order that spread across Europe, helping countless souls draw closer to Christ through devotion to His Mother. All seven died between 1261 and 1310, and they were canonized together by Pope Leo XIII in 1888.
Practical Lessons
- Live in Fraternity: The Seven Founders remind us of the power of community in living out the faith. We can seek to strengthen our friendships, families, or parish groups by fostering unity, forgiveness, and support.
- Seek Mary’s Guidance: Their devotion to the Blessed Virgin shaped their mission. In our lives, we can turn to Mary in prayer—especially through the Rosary or devotion to Our Lady of Sorrows—for guidance and consolation.
- Detach from Worldly Goods: Leaving behind wealth and success, the Founders show the value of simplicity. Today, this can mean reevaluating our priorities, decluttering possessions, or choosing time with loved ones and God over constant busyness.
Prayer
Seven Holy Founders of the Servite Order, faithful sons of Mary, intercede for us that we may grow in love for Christ through devotion to His Mother. Pray that we may live in unity, serve others generously, and remain detached from worldly distractions so that our hearts may rest in God alone. Amen.
