St. Helena of Constantinople was born around the year 248 in Bithynia (modern-day Turkey). Of humble origins, she eventually became the mother of Constantine the Great, the first Christian Roman Emperor. After Constantine’s rise to power and his embrace of Christianity, Helena herself converted and lived the rest of her life in devotion to God and service to the Church. She used her influence and wealth to care for the poor, build churches, and promote Christian worship throughout the empire.

Helena is best remembered for her pilgrimage to the Holy Land in her later years. There, she oversaw the construction of churches at holy sites, including in Bethlehem and on the Mount of Olives. Tradition holds that she discovered the True Cross of Christ during her journey in Jerusalem. Her zeal for preserving and honoring sacred sites made her one of the most important figures in establishing Christian devotion in the early centuries of the Church. St. Helena died around 330 AD, leaving a legacy of faith, generosity, and devotion to Christ that continues to inspire believers today.

Practical Lessons

  1. Use Influence for Good: Helena used her position as the emperor’s mother to serve the Church and the poor. In modern life, we can apply this by using our skills, influence, or resources—whether at work, home, or in our community—to support those in need and to strengthen the faith of others.
  2. Make Faith Visible in Daily Life: Helena built churches and promoted devotion in tangible ways. For us, this can mean placing a crucifix or holy image in our homes, making time for family prayer, or supporting parish projects—practical steps that show our faith to others.
  3. Stay Faithful at Any Stage of Life: Helena’s greatest works came later in her life. Her example encourages us not to think we are ever “too old” or “too late” to begin new works of faith—whether volunteering, deepening prayer, or mentoring younger generations.

Prayer

St. Helena, faithful servant of Christ and mother of Constantine, pray for us. Intercede that we may use our gifts and influence to serve the Church and the poor. Help us to make our faith visible in our homes and communities and to remain faithful to God at every stage of life. Amen.
