St. John Eudes was born in 1601 in Normandy, France. From an early age, he showed a deep devotion to God and a desire to serve the poor and the sick. Ordained a priest in 1625, he quickly became known for his powerful preaching and compassionate care during times of plague, when he ministered tirelessly to the suffering. In a time when clergy formation was weak, John recognized the urgent need for well-trained and holy priests. To answer this need, he founded the Congregation of Jesus and Mary (Eudists), dedicated to the formation of priests and the renewal of parish missions.
John also had a profound devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, becoming one of the earliest promoters of these devotions. He composed prayers, celebrated feasts, and encouraged Christians to draw closer to the love and mercy of Christ and His Mother through their hearts. His ministry inspired countless conversions and a renewal of faith in France. John Eudes died in 1680 and was canonized in 1925, leaving a legacy of devotion, priestly renewal, and service to the Church.
Practical Lessons
- Care for the Sick and Vulnerable: John’s service during plague outbreaks challenges us to look after the vulnerable in our own communities, whether by visiting someone in the hospital, checking in on an elderly neighbor, or volunteering at a shelter.
- Support Priests and Vocations: His dedication to priestly formation reminds us to pray for our priests and to encourage vocations. A simple act like writing a thank-you note to your parish priest or supporting seminary programs can make a difference.
- Promote Devotion at Home: John’s love for the Sacred Heart of Jesus and Immaculate Heart of Mary can be lived out today by praying as a family, displaying sacred images at home, or celebrating First Fridays and Marian feasts with special prayers.
