St. Bernard of Clairvaux

Bernard of Clairvaux united contemplation and action, guiding his monastery while shaping the wider Church. His writings on love and humility remind us that true greatness lies not in power, but in a deep, abiding relationship with God that overflows into every aspect of life.

St. Bernard of Clairvaux was born in 1090 in Fontaine-lès-Dijon, France. From a young age, he displayed remarkable intelligence and a deep attraction to prayer and study. At the age of 22, Bernard entered the newly founded Cistercian monastery at Cîteaux, bringing with him more than 30 companions—including friends and family—whose lives were changed by his zeal. Later, he was sent to establish a new monastery at Clairvaux, where he became abbot and guided the community with wisdom, discipline, and devotion.

Bernard’s influence reached far beyond the cloister. He became one of the most powerful voices of the 12th century, advising popes, preaching the Second Crusade, and helping to heal divisions within the Church. Despite his involvement in public affairs, he remained first and foremost a monk, deeply committed to prayer, writing, and contemplation. His works on the love of God, humility, and devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary are still considered spiritual treasures today.

St. Bernard died in 1153 and was canonized just over 20 years later. Declared a Doctor of the Church, he is remembered as a reformer, theologian, and spiritual guide whose words and example continue to inspire.

Practical Lessons

  1. Bring Others Along in Faith: Bernard didn’t enter monastic life alone—he inspired friends and family to join him. In our daily lives, we can invite loved ones to Mass, share a book of faith, or simply pray with them. Encouraging others strengthens our own faith too.
  2. Balance Work and Prayer: Even while advising kings and popes, Bernard remained rooted in prayer. For us, this means setting aside regular moments for prayer, even on busy days, so that our decisions and work flow from a place of peace and connection with God.
  3. Use Words to Build Up: Bernard’s writings and sermons encouraged faith and devotion. Today, we can follow his example by being mindful of our words—using texts, emails, or conversations to encourage, comfort, or share faith rather than to criticize or tear down.

Prayer

St. Bernard of Clairvaux, devoted servant of Christ and lover of the Blessed Virgin Mary, intercede for us. Pray that we may balance prayer with action, speak words that inspire faith, and encourage those around us to grow closer to God. May your example lead us to deeper love for Christ and His Church. Amen.
