St. Joseph of Cupertino was born in 1603 in a small village in Italy to a poor family. From a young age he struggled with learning, often considered slow and clumsy, which made his path to the priesthood very difficult. After being rejected by several religious communities, he was finally accepted by the Franciscans as a servant, later admitted as a friar. His humility, prayer, and obedience set him apart, even when others doubted him.

Joseph became known for his extraordinary mystical experiences. While in prayer or during Mass, he was often seen levitating, so absorbed in God’s presence that he was lifted off the ground. These miracles drew many to witness his devotion, but also led to scrutiny from Church authorities. Despite the trials, Joseph remained obedient and humble, never seeking attention for himself but only desiring to glorify God.

He lived a life marked by simplicity, fasting, and charity, drawing people to a deeper faith through his example. St. Joseph of Cupertino died in 1663 and was canonized in 1767. He is now known as the patron saint of students, aviators, and all who struggle with exams or studies, because of his own difficulties in learning and the divine help he received.

Practical Lessons

  1. Persevere Through Struggles: St Joseph of Cupertino was considered incapable of study, yet he never gave up. For us today, his story encourages persistence when facing academic or workplace challenges—keep trying, even if progress is slow.
  2. Stay Humble With Success: Though people marveled at his levitations, Joseph stayed humble, giving all glory to God. In modern life, this reminds us to remain grounded when we achieve recognition at work, in school, or in family life—acknowledge the gifts as blessings from God.
  3. Turn Weakness into Strength: What others saw as Joseph’s shortcomings became a path for God’s grace. In our daily lives, we can turn weaknesses—like lack of confidence or limited skills—into opportunities to rely more on God and show patience with ourselves.

Prayer

St. Joseph of Cupertino, humble servant of God and patron of students, pray for us. Intercede that we may persevere in our challenges, remain humble in our achievements, and see God’s grace at work in our weaknesses. Help us to grow in faith and trust, knowing that with God, all things are possible. Amen.
