Blessed Thomas Tsugi was born in Japan in 1571 into a samurai family. Gifted with intelligence and charisma, he embraced Christianity at a young age and later joined the Society of Jesus as a Jesuit priest. Known for his eloquent preaching and joyful spirit, Thomas worked tirelessly to spread the Gospel throughout Japan during a time of severe persecution. He traveled from village to village, often in secret, encouraging Catholics to remain strong in their faith. His courage and compassion drew many to the Church, even though his ministry put him in constant danger.
Eventually, Thomas was arrested for his missionary work. Refusing to renounce his faith, he was condemned to death. In 1627, he was executed at Nagasaki alongside other faithful witnesses. Accounts of his martyrdom describe him going joyfully to his death, singing hymns and encouraging others to trust in Christ. His legacy continues as a powerful witness of faith, joy, and perseverance in the face of persecution.
Practical Lessons
- Share Faith with Joy: Blessed Thomas preached with enthusiasm, drawing people by his joy. In daily life, we can share our faith not only with words but through a joyful attitude at work, school, or home, showing that our hope in Christ brings real peace.
- Stay Steadfast under Pressure: Even in the face of execution, Thomas refused to renounce his beliefs. For us, this means holding firm to our values when pressured to compromise—whether that’s being honest at work, staying true to commitments, or standing up for what’s right in conversations.
- Encourage Others in Struggles: Thomas uplifted fellow Catholics in times of fear. In our lives, this can mean sending a supportive text to a struggling friend, praying with a family member, or reminding someone they are not alone in their challenges.
