Saint of the day

St. Margaret of Antioch

Born to a pagan family, Margaret chose Christ above comfort, status, and even life itself. Refusing marriage to a Roman official, she endured torture and death with unshaken faith. Her story, marked by courage and symbolic triumph over evil, reminds us that belonging to Christ demands fearless devotion.

St. Margaret of Antioch was born around 289 in Antioch (modern-day Turkey). The daughter of a pagan priest, she was secretly raised in the Christian faith by her nurse. When her father discovered her conversion, he cast her out, and she went to live in the countryside, devoting herself to prayer and care of the sheep. Margaret was known for her beauty and faith, which drew the attention of Olybrius, a Roman official, who desired to marry her. When she refused, declaring that she belonged to Christ alone, she was arrested and subjected to cruel tortures during the persecutions of Diocletian. Tradition recounts that she was miraculously delivered from harm, including surviving an encounter with a dragon, which symbolized the devil. Finally, she was beheaded around the year 304, giving her life in witness to Christ. Honored as one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers, St. Margaret became a beloved patroness of expectant mothers and a model of courage in faith.

Practical Lessons

  1. Stay Faithful Under Pressure: Margaret resisted both family rejection and the powerful threats of Roman authorities. In daily life, this reminds us to remain true to Christ even when facing ridicule, rejection, or difficult choices.
  2. Place Your Identity in Christ: Margaret’s beauty and position could have secured her worldly comfort, yet she chose fidelity to God over status. We can imitate her by remembering that our true worth comes not from appearance, wealth, or success, but from being children of God.
  3. Trust God’s Power Over Evil: The story of Margaret’s victory over the dragon reminds us that evil is real but cannot overcome God’s grace. Each day, we can call on Christ to strengthen us against temptation and spiritual attack.

Prayer

St. Margaret of Antioch, courageous virgin and martyr, intercede for us that we may remain steadfast in faith, confident in God’s love, and strong against the trials we face. Pray especially for mothers, that they may be strengthened in hope and protected under your care. May we, like you, choose Christ above all things and remain faithful to the end. Amen.
