Vietnamese Catholic priest sentenced to eight years in prison

Fr. Nguyen Van Ly, a Vietnamese priest and pro-democracy activist, was sentenced to eight years in prison for "anti-government activities". He has already spent 14 of the past 24 years imprisoned for his opposition to the Communist government of Vietnam.

The Catholic Church is allowed to exist in Vietnam but is under severe restrictions.
