Homily of the Day

Thursday of the Twenty-first Week in Ordinary Time

Like the faithful servant, God has put us in charge of his household. Naturally, it is very easy for us to neglect the part about hypocrisy and irresponsibility because in that situation, we would always be trustworthy. But how might today’s Gospel speak to us personally. It could relate to a variety of households to which God has entrusted us.

God has entrusted the earth to us. As caretakers, we should be responsible for its well-being. Jesus has entrusted his mission to us and we should see to it that his Word reaches those who have not heard it or are indifferent to it. God expects us to take responsibility for our brothers and sisters who live in poverty. And what about the Beatitude that reminds us that we have to be peacemakers? Do we practice that?

There are many ways in which we are called upon to respond to Jesus’ call to service. According to each of our individual gifts and talents, we are summoned to holiness. We are summoned to action.

Let us take time out to look around and ask ourselves: “How can I be a faithful and prudent servant?” If there are changes to be made, today is the day to change. If we can do better, today is the day to do better. Let us reflect on today’s parable; let it have an impact on us. Doing so, we will surely be among the blessed.
