DAILY DEVOTIONS, LIFELONG FAITH

The Family Love Dare Journal: Our 40 Days of Lent

24 Feb 2009

Pre-Dare:

We just watched the movie Fireproof. It was amazing. Although my husband and I have a very strong Christian marriage, we sometimes don’t see that reflected in our family. Why?

We are both so called ‘experts’ in marriage and family. My husband is a physician with a BA in psychology and I am trained as a social worker. We have coached pre-Cana couples and married couples for years, so why then does our own family struggle and fight constantly? We did all the things we thought we were supposed to do: Homeschooled for years, took our kids to daily Mass, attend confession with them at least once a month and they come with us to faith-based conferences, camps and classes. So WHAT ARE WE DOING WRONG?!!

We have seven children, six still at home from ages 17 years down to 7 years-old. One has Asperger’s (a mild form of autism) and is cognitively delayed. This brings out the best and the worst of all of us. The others have issues from learning disorders, anxiety disorders and ADHD. Hubby is a doctor who works very long, difficult hours and I am a writer, literacy volunteer and substitute teacher.

So, we are…out of desire and desperation…going to try something new. We are going to take the Love Dare as a family during Lent. We are going to see if it transforms our family the way it has transformed some marriages. We want to ‘Fireproof’ our family. Come along if you’d like and follow our journey. We ask only that you pray for us as we will for you. God bless.
