St. Margaret Mary Alacoque was born in 1647 in France. From a young age, she showed a deep love for prayer and devotion to the Blessed Sacrament, though she also endured years of illness that left her bedridden. After recovering, she entered the Visitation convent at Paray-le-Monial, where she experienced extraordinary visions of Christ. In these visions, Jesus revealed His Sacred Heart to her, burning with love for humanity and wounded by indifference and sin. Margaret Mary was asked to spread devotion to the Sacred Heart, including the practice of First Fridays and the Holy Hour of Eucharistic Adoration. Though she faced disbelief and ridicule at first, she remained faithful to Christ’s mission. Her perseverance bore fruit, and devotion to the Sacred Heart spread throughout the world, becoming one of the Church’s most beloved devotions. She died in 1690 and was canonized in 1920.
Practical Lessons
- Stay Faithful Through Doubt: Margaret Mary’s visions were met with skepticism, yet she remained steadfast. In our lives, we may encounter doubt from others or within ourselves, but we can continue trusting God’s call.
- Live Devotion in Daily Life: The Sacred Heart devotion is not only about prayer but also about love in action. We can honor the Heart of Jesus by showing kindness, forgiving quickly, and loving generously in our families and workplaces.
- Find Strength in the Eucharist: Margaret Mary drew her courage from time before the Blessed Sacrament. We too can set aside time each week—or even each day—for Adoration or quiet prayer before the tabernacle to renew our strength in Christ.
