St. Peter Claver, a Spanish Jesuit priest, devoted his life to the enslaved Africans arriving in Cartagena, Colombia. Called the “Slave of the Slaves Forever,” he met each ship with food, medicine, and mercy. St. Peter Claver, a Spanish Jesuit priest, was born in 1580 in Verdú, Catalonia. After entering the Society of Jesus, he volunteered for missionary work in the New World. Ordained in Cartagena, Colombia, in 1616, he dedicated his life to ministering to enslaved Africans who were brought to the port city under brutal conditions. Known as the “Slave of the Slaves Forever,” Peter Claver met the ships arriving with human cargo, bringing food, medicine, and comfort to those suffering. He baptized more than 300,000 people during his ministry and tirelessly advocated for the dignity and humanity of the enslaved. Despite harsh criticism and opposition, he remained steadfast in his mission until his death in 1654. Canonized in 1888, St. Peter Claver is remembered as a patron of missionary work and a defender of human dignity.

Practical Lessons

  1. Serve the Vulnerable Directly: St. Peter Claver went to the docks to meet people at their lowest point. In daily life, this means actively seeking ways to serve—visiting the sick, volunteering at shelters, or checking in on someone who is struggling.
  2. Use Small Acts of Care: He brought medicine, food, and kindness to the enslaved. For us, small, concrete acts—like cooking a meal for a neighbor, donating clothes, or offering encouragement—can restore hope to others.
  3. Stand Up for Human Dignity: Claver defended those considered “less” by society. In today’s world, that can mean advocating for the marginalized, whether through supporting just causes, treating everyone with respect, or speaking up when we witness injustice.

Prayer

St. Peter Claver, servant of Christ and friend of the suffering, intercede for us. Pray that we may see Christ in the poor, the forgotten, and the oppressed. Help us to live lives of compassion, courage, and service, defending the dignity of every person we encounter. May we follow your example of mercy and love in our daily actions. Amen.
