St. Lydia of Thyatira was a successful businesswoman in the ancient city of Philippi and is remembered as the first documented convert to Christianity in Europe (Acts 16:14-15). Originally from Thyatira, a city known for its dyeing industry, she dealt in purple cloth, a luxury item of her time. While in Philippi, Lydia encountered St. Paul, who was preaching by the river where she and other women had gathered for prayer. Scripture tells us that “the Lord opened her heart” to Paul’s message, and she and her entire household were baptized.

After her conversion, Lydia immediately put her faith into action by offering hospitality to Paul and his companions, opening her home as a meeting place for the early Church. Her courage, generosity, and faith made her a foundational figure in the spread of Christianity in Europe.

Practical Lessons

  1. Bring Faith Into Your Work: Lydia was a businesswoman who used her resources to support the early Church. In our own lives, this means practicing honesty and integrity at work, treating coworkers fairly, and using our professional success to help others.
  2. Practice Hospitality Daily: Lydia opened her home to Paul and the early Christians. Today, this can be as simple as welcoming friends, family, or even new parishioners into your home, sharing meals, and creating spaces of warmth and community.
  3. Lead With Courage: Lydia did not hide her new faith, even though it was risky. We can follow her example by living our faith publicly—saying grace at meals, supporting parish initiatives, or standing firm in our values when challenged.

Prayer

St. Lydia of Thyatira, first among the faithful in Europe to welcome Christ, pray for us. Intercede that we may live our faith boldly in our daily work, our homes, and our communities. Help us to practice generosity, hospitality, and courage so that our lives may also bear witness to the Gospel. Amen.
