St. Stephen (Protomartyr)

As the first Christian martyr, St. Stephen showed courage, humility, and forgiveness. Serving the poor and preaching boldly, he faced death with prayer for his persecutors. His life encourages believers to serve faithfully, proclaim the Gospel without fear, and forgive others, living with hearts devoted entirely to Christ.

St. Stephen, the first Christian martyr, was a man filled with faith, wisdom, and the Holy Spirit. Chosen as one of the first deacons of the Church, he assisted the Apostles by serving the poor and preaching the Gospel with boldness. His powerful witness and miraculous works drew many to the faith, but also stirred opposition among those resistant to the message of Christ.

When brought before the Sanhedrin, Stephen fearlessly proclaimed Jesus as the fulfillment of God’s promises, even as his accusers grew enraged. As they stoned him to death, Stephen prayed for his persecutors, echoing the words of Christ on the Cross: “Lord, do not hold this sin against them.” His martyrdom around the year 34 marked the beginning of Christian witness through blood, and his courage continues to inspire believers to this day.

Practical Lessons

  1. Serve with Humility: Stephen was chosen to help care for the poor, reminding us that no service is too small when done for Christ. Look for ways to serve your family, parish, or community with a spirit of humility and love.
  2. Speak the Truth with Courage: Stephen boldly proclaimed the Gospel even before hostile crowds. In our lives, we can witness to the truth of Christ in conversations, online, and in public, never compromising our faith out of fear.
  3. Forgive Freely: As he was dying, Stephen prayed for his persecutors. This challenges us to forgive those who wrong us—whether in small daily annoyances or in deeper wounds—so that our hearts remain free for love.

Prayer

St. Stephen, faithful servant and first martyr of Christ, intercede for us that we may serve with humility, speak the truth with courage, and forgive with generosity of heart. Pray that we may remain steadfast in faith and grow in love, even in the face of trials. Amen.
