Gifts of Peace and Triumph!

Genesis 14:18-20

And Mel-chizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine; he was priest of God Most High. And he blessed him and said,

“Blessed be Abram by God Most High,

maker of heaven and earth; and blessed be God Most High,

who has delivered your enemies into your hand!”

Jesus taught his disciples on the Emmaus Road that the Old Testament was actually about him. As Augustine said, the New Covenant is hidden in the Old Covenant and the Old Covenant is only fully revealed in the New. One of the earliest foreshadowings of the Holy Eucharist in Scripture is when the Priest King Melchizedek brought gifts of peace and triumph and blessed God Most High for granting his servant Abraham victory in battle. In the same way, our Priest King Jesus brings us, who share the faith of Abraham, gifts of peace and triumph when he gives us his own Body and Blood by which he triumphed over the prince of this world and won peace with God.
