Have you heard of the new high-tech outdoor game geocaching (look for it at www.geocaching.com)? If you have heard of orienteering, try doing it with a GPS locator " that is geocaching.
It's a form of treasure hunting. Believe it or not, we are being called to be treasure hunters. To have faith, as described by our writer from Hebrews, is to be on a quest (or treasure hunt if you will). To find and hold our faith means to be pursuing the promises of God, as Abraham did.
Jesus takes this up a notch for us by pointing out that as we pursue that heavenly treasure here on earth, the treasure is being stored for us in heaven. "So" no matter how much I try to do to pursue God I will be frustrated because I can't get everything here and now?" Precisely!
In our culture of immediate gratification, we want to see the results of our work and receive the rewards of our labors " right now. But laboring for God doesn't always work that way. Yes, we receive consolations from the Holy Spirit, but they are only the "first fruits" of all God has planned for us.
And it is not a question of "delayed gratification," either. What we are building is our treasure chest in heaven. That's what Jesus says it is. No one can steal it away. No decay, no moth can corrupt it. It is being held for us as a precious treasure. What are these treasures? They are the things we do here on earth that give glory and honor to God.
Build your treasure chest.
Keep searching for it with the only true compass that is Christ.
