Blessed Adrian Fortescue, born in 1476 in Hertfordshire, England, was a nobleman of great influence and deep faith. As a member of the distinguished Fortescue family, Adrian enjoyed a life of privilege and responsibility. He was a knight, serving with distinction in various military campaigns, and was a loyal subject of King Henry VIII.
Adrian’s life took a significant turn when he became deeply committed to his Catholic faith. Despite the political and religious turmoil of his time, he remained steadfast in his devotion to the Church. Adrian was known for his piety, generosity, and dedication to his family and community.
During the reign of King Henry VIII, England underwent a profound religious upheaval. The king’s break with the Catholic Church and the establishment of the Church of England led to widespread persecution of those who remained loyal to the Pope. Adrian, refusing to renounce his faith, became a target of this persecution.
In 1539, Adrian was arrested and imprisoned in the Tower of London. Despite the harsh conditions and pressure to conform, he remained unwavering in his commitment to his Catholic faith. On July 9, 1539, Adrian Fortescue was executed for his refusal to accept the king’s supremacy over the Church. He was beatified in 1895 by Pope Leo XIII, recognized for his heroic virtue and martyrdom.
