St. Christina the Astonishing was born in Belgium around 1150. As a young woman, she experienced a severe seizure and was believed to have died. During her funeral Mass, she suddenly arose, levitated to the rafters of the church, and described having been shown Heaven, Hell, and Purgatory. From that moment on, Christina dedicated her life to penance and prayer for the souls in Purgatory. She lived in extreme poverty, performed acts of self-denial, and often behaved in ways that astonished those around her, such as throwing herself into fire or freezing rivers without harm. Though many thought her eccentric, others recognized her holiness and sought her prayers. She died in 1224, remembered as a mystic who bore witness to the reality of eternal life and the need for repentance and intercession.
Practical Lessons
- Take the Afterlife Seriously: Christina’s visions remind us that Heaven, Hell, and Purgatory are real. In daily life, we can live with eternity in mind by making choices that draw us closer to God and away from sin.
- Offer Sacrifices for Others: Christina embraced penance for the souls in Purgatory. Today, we can offer fasting, prayer, or small sacrifices for loved ones who have died, trusting in the Communion of Saints.
- Embrace God’s Call, Even When Misunderstood: Christina’s unusual life often confused people, yet she remained faithful to her mission. We too may face misunderstanding when we follow Christ wholeheartedly, but we are called to remain true to Him regardless of others’ opinions.
Prayer
St. Christina the Astonishing, you bore witness to the realities of eternity and offered your life in prayer and sacrifice for souls. Intercede for us, that we may live with Heaven in mind, offer acts of love for those who have gone before us, and remain faithful to God’s call even when it is difficult. Pray that we may grow in holiness and persevere until we share eternal life with Christ. Amen.
