Pope Francis: Against the West?

“The Faith is Europe. And Europe is the Faith,” wrote Hilaire Belloc after that bloodbath we call World War I. “Either Europe will return to the Faith or she will perish.”

By 1938, Belloc concluded Christian Europe was done:

“The bad work begun at the Reformation is bearing its final fruit in the dissolution of our ancient doctrines — the very structure of society is dissolving.” He was right. Europe is the dying continent.

And looking back at the history of the Old Continent, we see the truth of G.K. Chesterton’s insight: When men cease to believe in God, they do not then believe in nothing, they will believe in anything.

Consider the idols to which European Man has burnt incense since losing his faith: Darwinism, Marxism, Bolshevism, fascism, Nazism, now globalism — the idea of a secular paradise where mankind’s needs are met by the state and people spend their lives consuming cultural and material goods until the time comes for the painless exit.

Francis window 3Wednesday, even as Europe has said goodbye to Rome, Rome began to say goodbye to Europe, where the fastest growing faith is manifest in the mosques rising from Moscow to Madrid. The College of Cardinals, for the first time ever, chose a pope from the New World: Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio of Argentina.

To be exact, Pope Francis is not of the indigenous peoples of the New World. His father was an immigrant from Italy who came to Argentina before he was born. Yet, though by blood an Italian, Pope Francis, heart and soul, does not belong to Europe.

The reaction of our secular media to the election of this first Jesuit pope, who lives his “preferential option for the poor,” was easily predictable.

On redistribution — “Is he a conservative, or a Great Society liberal who will push the ‘social gospel’?” — the new pope passes with honors. He has a simple apartment, rides the bus and lives among the Buenos Aires poor.

But on the “social issues” — “Is Pope Francis a progressive who will move the Church to a more ‘tolerant’ view of abortion and same-sex marriage?” — the disappointment of the media elite was evident.

Pope Francis adheres to orthodox Catholic teaching that abortion is the killing of an unborn child entailing automatic excommunication for all involved. He has denounced same-sex marriage and regards homosexual adoptions as a crime against children.

That the media showed visible disappointment at learning this makes one wonder if they know anything at all about the Catholic Church.

To be Catholic is to be orthodox.

Indeed, let us presume the impossible — that the Church should suddenly allow the ordination of women, and decree that abortions in the first month of pregnancy are now licit, and that homosexual unions, if for life, will henceforth be recognized and blessed. This would require the Church to admit that for 2,000 years it had been in error on matters of faith and morals, and hence is not infallible. But if the Church could have been so wrong for so long, while the world was right, and many had suffered for centuries because the Church erred, what argument would be left for remaining Catholic?

If the Church were to admit it had been wrong since the time of Christ about how men must live their lives to attain eternal life, why should Catholics obey the commandments of such a fallible and erring Church? Why not follow our separated brethren of the Protestant faiths, and choose what doctrines we wish to believe and what commandments we wish to obey?

And how have those churches fared that have accommodated themselves to the world?

Of the Christian denominations, the closest to Catholicism has been the Anglican or Episcopal Church. For a time, Anglicans were not regarded as heretics. For though they had rejected the primacy of Rome, they had not rejected the truths fundamental to Catholicism. They had been seen in the time of Henry VIII as schismatics. But lately the Episcopal Church has been in the vanguard of all Christian churches in ordaining women priests and consecrating women and homosexuals as bishops.

Result? No church has suffered greater losses, as Catholicism has benefited from a steady stream of defecting Anglican clergy.

What the secular media reaction to Pope Francis reveals is that traditional Catholicism is today almost as deeply alien to our present-day West as it was in Roman times, only the West chooses to ignore Catholicism, where Rome feared and persecuted it.

One hears that President Obama will send to the official installation of the Holy Father to represent America our ranking Catholic officeholders, Vice President Joe Biden, along with former Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

One wonders what His Holiness will be thinking as he greets these ornaments of American Catholicism, both of whom regard Roe v. Wade, which has resulted in 53 million abortion deaths, as a milestone of progress for women’s rights and homosexual marriage as the civil rights cause of the 21st century.

Well, if the previous Popes survived meeting and shaking hands and even faking a smile with Bush, this one will definetly survive Biden and Pelosi.

“Consider the idols to which European Man has burnt incense since losing his faith: Darwinism, Marxism, Bolshevism, fascism, Nazism, now globalism”. You missed the main one: capitalism. The true God of the Western Man of the recent centuries. And, unlike the ones you mentioned, one of which is a proven scientific theory and the rest are dead ideologies, the greed-fueled and greed-promoting economic system is far from being defeated.

  • Peter Nyikos

Evolution is proven scientific theory. “Darwinism” is an ill-defined word that could mean lots of things, from Darwin’s original theory which knew nothing of genetics or biochemistry, to a deistic/atheistic form which insists that there was no intervention of God in the origin of life (which actually was not discussed by Darwin) nor any time thereafter until modern humans evolved.

  • Peter Nyikos

Globalism is far from defeated or dead. It is the reigning ideology of today.

And fascism is far from dead. A form of it exists in China. The state is supreme, censorship reigns, but big business is given wide latitude as long as it subordinates its interests to those of the state. Chauvinism is encouraged, including saber-rattling with respect to some islands contested with Japan, and against all thought of Taiwan becoming a sovereign country.

True capitalism has been choked out from all the other “isms” time and again. To believe that the woes of this world are otherwise is ignorance at it’s finest.

But will Pelosi and Biden survive this Pope? Evidently he does not mince words with hypocrites.

I hope he informs both precisely and clearly what it means to their soul and the souls of others to support abortion. Turn the visit from ‘their demands’ into the real issue: God is STILL God.

  • John

“Proven scientific theory”????? Huh????? Man from algae???? NOT proven!!!

  • John

Bush was a fake pro-lifer, having nominated six pro-abort attorneys to the Texas Supreme Court and sweet little Laura is as pro baby murder as there is. But Biden and Pelosi are worse, considering they have been taught, but openly reject, the teachings of the church by their actions. Yet they love to state that they are Catholic. Many, many “Catholic” politicians act the same

  • Aging Flower Child

Oh dear. Pope Francis cannot win this one, at least I don’t know how he could. I would soooo love to see him give some indication of acknowlegment of their grotesque public sinfullness – is there a Mass at installation? If not – there may not be an appropriate time and place here to do such a thing – which means some of the faithful will rail. I hope he is able to at least privately let them know where they stand. In deep doo doo!

capitalism is NOT inherently evil and is the fairest form of government mankind has EVER known. Jesus did not come to establish his kingdom on earth did he? Why do so many forget that SLOTH is a mortal sin?

  • Francis

I am wondering whether he will wear the Tiara. Also a pope is crowned not “installed” You install kitchen cabinets or a muffler. He will continue the demolition of the once Catholic Catholic Church

  • kirk

Francis: Be more specific – just what do you mean by “…the demolition of the once Catholic Catholic Church”?

  • Dee

Respect for life is not a view; it’s a fundamental teaching and thus won’t be changed. Same sex marriage is not a church issue, in my opinion, because the sacrament of marriage is for a man and a woman. By definition, the couple must be unified in love and open to procreation. You can change all of the civil laws you want but God’s law is God’s law.

  • Dee

Hell will be full with those who said and acted upon “my will be done” and heaven will be full of those who said and acted upon “God’s will be done”.

  • mike m

Nancy and Joe ‘s souls are going whoops? Maybe I should’nt have said that

  • mike m

On a more serious note, as rank and file Catholics we MUST continue to defend the faith, agains’t the evil one, because he still exists.

  • James Stagg

    That is just plain mean.

  • Ted

I hope he threatens both with Excommunication

  • Ted

You mean that is just plain truth

  • omy

I don’t know what you’re pickin at Pat….? Your article goes nowhere. Why jump the gun? Wait and see. The man is full of Christ. Wait….. Everyone is jumpin in drawing lots of “what if’s” and trying microscopically to look under his hem as if he is up to something. Same thing was done to Jesus. People could not understand how he could be so kind. In the west….we’ve made a fabricated Jesus. We with our securities and safety nets, so comfy. We have no clue what this man has been through. He sees through eyes most of us do not have.

  • Normansmom

I am pretty sure he will look at them and say, “Please pray for me!” as he has been doing to all whom he has met over the past few days. If we give, we receive. If we pray for our Holy Father, his prayers for us may be heard more clearly by God our Heavenly Father. Thus, I think that Pope Francis’s request of prayers is actually his way of having God bless us…And those two really, really need God’s merciful blessing.

the last pope to be crowned was Pope Paul–the Tiara now resides on display at the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception in Washington,DC

  • Keweljewel

I can’t think of anyone to disgrace our faith than these two, the challenges have already begun, for Pope Francis, pray he remains strong, and not swayed by the demands of the world, and it’s evil doers……time will tell!!!!

  • Jacqueleen

Pope Francis must know John 31 where it says that God listens to the godly and not to sinners….so asking them for prayers is a waste of time.

  • Jacqueleen

Relative to capitalism, more popes in Catholic history have spoken out loudly that Socialism/Communism is an evil. Popes and the rest of the clergy have spoken out loudly that abortion is an intrinisic evil. The problem is that these loud voices have fallen on deaf ears. Nancy Pelosi was spoken to by her Bishop and by Pope Benedict XVI but she still goes on her merry way proclaiming to be Catholic while supporting Obamacare and funding abortion, a woman’s right to kill her unborn. How sinister can one get? The only father she and Biden know is their father the devil!
I don’t hear the clergy loudly proclaiming that sex outside of marriage is a sin for both men and women. The men seem to get off the hook when it comes to their part in the act of abortion???? Shepherd the flock, dear Francis and that includes the sins of MEN, TOO.

  • http://www.facebook.com/cpatt58 Chuck Patterson

I really do think this pope will shock more than a few. The Catholic Church will triumpt over the foe! God has a great plan for the Holy Father. We must never forget that, while we admire and respect Pope Francis, he is just a man, prone to sin as are we all. But we should also never forget that the Holy Spirit is in charge, not Francis. The pope is just the messenger boy. He cannot form doctrine or change the teachings because he wants to or that he woke up on the wrong side of the bed. He is the caretaker of Christ’s Church, and will be until He comes again in glory. So all these misguides souls who are clammoring for women clergy, abortion on demand or homosexual marriage, go somewhere else, please. These things and more offend the Spirit and Jesus is not about to have His Church bow to these liberals. Have faith that the Spirit know what He is doing. Sorry, but I trust the Spirit than all those liberals combined. We follow God, the infallible One, not the fallibile humans. We trust that the Spirit is speaking through His Servant of Servants and that Francis will do what the Spirit wants.

  • http://www.facebook.com/cpatt58 Chuck Patterson

Hey Napoleon tried to destroy the Church, to which the pope told him, “Good luck, we have been trying to do it for centuries and couldn’t do it. What makes you think YOU can?” In other words Francis, the Catholic Church was established by Jesus Himself, (read about that promise in something called the Gospels!) and He will not allows the gates of Hell to prevail. Other churches will come and go, but we will always have a Catholic Church!!

  • http://www.facebook.com/cpatt58 Chuck Patterson

You are right Dee. But I forsee a time where the clergy of the Church will be put on trial or sued for their refusal to conduct same sex marriages. It will come to that and sooner than you think!

  • JMJ Cathy

God is the same yesterday, today, and for all eternity!

And thus – so is our Catholic Teachings and the Church – With or without the acknowledgement or blessings of the representatives of our United States. (plain and simple) Where God is… there go I.

  • Charles Fears

Since the Reformation we have had Holy Pope’s. Pope Francis is a Holy man. He was chosen by God, Formed by our Blessed Mother Mary, lead by the Holy Spirit and He will live the life of Christ. He will always be in my prayers ecery day.

  • Francis

Yes: Kirk I will answer your question. The so called holy mass is not holy at all. The Latin Mass going back to Christ was codified in 1567. Meaning, it became “LAW”.. It is Dogmatic (a truth) that can never be changed. The church broke its own law by substituting a protestant service.for the real Mass. The Bible speaks of a moment the Sacrifice will be removed from the altar. There will be total desolation. Pope Pius V declared from the throne in Quo Primum If any changes are brought on the works of the Council ” The wrath of “God and Peter and Paul will come over the Church”.In 1967 the mass was changed and the wrath of God and Peter and Paul came over the church, .The Holy Catholic Church became Protestant over night. The Holy Virgin in Lasalette has said that ” Rome will lose the Faith”. Also priest are no Priest, and Bishops no bishops. . .

  • Galloglasses

I am getting REAL tired of people on Catholic blogs saying we should give up on Europe. What we are now, other continents will become soon, will you give up on them in turn when they become as ill as we are now? Because thats what it sounds like to us European Faithful as you prepare to give up on us.

  • http://www.facebook.com/joanne.thorn.14 JoAnne Thorn

Can you help me understand what you are saying by clairying a few things?

Where in the Bible does it describe, “…a moment the Sacrifice will be removed from the altar. There will be total desolation…”?
How does the use of the Mass translated into local languages make them “protestant?” That is very confusing, as I do not see explanations of those two statements.
    Thanks

  • Peter Nyikos

Francis outdoes the Society of Pius X, started by Archbishop Lefebre, and perhaps even Gary Matatics, in claiming that the Catholic Church has become heretical. The apparitions at LaSalette have never been approved and have never been encouraged the way those at Guadalupe, Lourdes, and Fatima have been encouraged.
