Hebrews 11:6
And without faith it is impossible to please him. For whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.
Certain sectors of Christianity treat faith like a species of magic or hypnosis. The idea seems to be that if you simply “visualize” whatever goody you want and refuse"against all the blandishments of common sense or superior claims of morality"to relinquish your “vision” then somehow God will be obliged to cough up the ransom for this metaphysical hostage situation and give you that new car or stock portfolio that you demand. This is the burden of much “name it and claim it” (more accurately “blab it and grab it”) doctrine that is popular among so many upper middle class Americans (who never seem to test this theology by preaching it in the Sudan or among people who could really use the material wealth we already possess to excess). In contrast, Scripture describes faith, not in magical or hypnotic terms, but in relational terms. We have faith in the God who is, not in the God of our imaginations. And we have faith that he is good and rewards those who seek him. Seek first his kingdom and his righteousness and everything we need"-not necessarily want"-will be added to us as well. But our faith must be in Him Who is, not in Him Whom we wish. Today, put your faith in the great I AM. He will reward such faith.
