After journeying nearly 14,000 kilometers from Mexico, the Pilgrim Image of Our Lady of Guadalupeโgifted to the Philippines by the Bishops of Mexicoโhas finally arrived, not merely for a brief visit, but to embark on a historic, six-month pilgrimage that will bring her maternal presence to more than sixty churches and shrines scattered across the Philippine Islands.
The image, a second-class relic of Our Lady of Guadalupe, was solemnly welcomed at the Manila Cathedral, where President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., together with Church leaders and the faithful, publicly consecrated and entrusted the Philippines to Our Lady of Guadalupe.
Yet, like a mother seeking out her children, the Madre Peregrina will not remain in Manila, but will travel throughout the archipelago to bring the message of Guadalupe to countless Filipinos who may never have the opportunity to visit Mexico.
“We are an archipelagic nation, so she will cross waters, rivers and roads, traveling through Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. For six months, Our Lady of Guadalupe will visit more than sixty shrines and churches so that our people may be blessed by her presence,” said Dr. Patricia Sison, one of the organizers.
The Philippines, home to the largest Catholic population in Asia, was affectionately described by St. John Paul II as un pueblo amante de Marรญaโ”a people in love with Mary.”
For Filipino Catholics, devotion to Our Lady of Guadalupe is more than a tradition imported from Latin America. She is the Celestial and Pro-Life Patroness of the Philippines, a title especially meaningful for a nation that remains among the few in the world that has not legalized abortion, divorce, or same-sex marriage.
Dr. Sison believes the Blessed Mother is coming at a providential moment.
“The Philippines has been undergoing many challengesโnot only economic, but political and international. In the West Philippine Sea, our fishermen are struggling from the invasion of China. Families are under attack. We remain one of the last countries that has not legalized abortion or divorce, and we continue praying fervently that these bills will never pass into law.
“The Blessed Mother knows this. She knows our struggles, and she wants to save the Filipino family. She wants to save the country.”
Nearly five hundred years ago, Our Lady appeared to St. Juan Diego in Mexico and ushered in one of the greatest mass conversions in Christian history. Today, she comes to the Philippinesโa nation battered by calamities, wounded by corruption, and increasingly tempted by secular ideologiesโto remind Filipinos that they have not been left orphaned. They have been given a Mother, and she has come to visit her children.
“Many mystics have said that the Triumph of the Immaculate Heart will begin here in the Philippines. So you can imagine the spiritual battles we are going throughโthe attacks on the family, the attacks on life, the attacks on our morals, the attacks on our government, the tremendous graft and corruption.
“She comes to bring us hope. She comes to bring her Son to us, to make Him more known and more loved. The Rosary, next to the Holy Mass, is the most powerful weapon we can ever, ever have.โ
When Our Lady appeared to Juan Diego in 1531, she came as a mother leading souls to her Son. Her miraculous image depicts her clothed with the sun, standing upon the crescent moon, while crushing the serpent beneath her feet, representing that she and her children would triumph over evil.
Dr. Sison believes the pilgrimage carries a mission far beyond the Philippines.
“I know we will be blessed. I know the Blessed Mother wants to do this to save us from the darkness and the evils surrounding the world today. I believe that not only the Philippines, but even the world itself, can be transformed.
“Through this pilgrimage, we will pray for families, for the preservation of life from womb to tomb, for peace in the Middle East, Ukraine, the West Philippine Sea, and everywhere. We will pray for the conversion of China and Russia as Our Lady has pleaded with us since Fatima and Akita. Our Lady is not short of continuously pleading with us and pleading with her Son to spare the world from the punishment that we most likely really deserve.โ
The historic pilgrimage is fully backed and endorsed by the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP). It forms part of the global preparation for the 500th anniversary of the Guadalupe apparitions in 2031, for which Catholics worldwide are participating in an intercontinental novena.
โDuring this pilgrimage, the Act of Consecration and Entrustment to Our Lady of Guadalupe shall be recited in all Masses in every church she visits,โ said CBCP President Archbishop Gilbert Garcera.
For many Filipino Catholics, the arrival of the Madre Peregrina feels like a mother coming home to visit her children.
“What a blessing for us Filipinos! Thank you, Our Lady of Guadalupe, for coming here to the Philippines,” shared Marian devotee Marleen Munezโa sentiment echoed by thousands who gathered at the Manila Cathedral to welcome her image.
The six-month pilgrimage will conclude on December 12th, the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, with the permanent enshrinement of her image at the Manila Cathedral. The official pilgrimage itinerary can be found on the official Facebook page of Our Lady of Guadalupe – Philippine Pilgrimage 2026.
As Our Lady of Guadalupe once spoke words of reassurance to St. Juan Diego, she continues to speak the same words nearly five centuries later, this time to the Filipino people: โAm I not here, I who am your Mother?โ
