St. Blaise

As a child, I remember having my throat blessed on the feast of St. Blaise. I was never too sure who he was or why we did this. Also, it seems like the practice has been forgotten. Would you please help me?

St. Blaise was born in the 3rd century and became the bishop of Sebaste in Armenia. A devoted shepherd to his people, he was known for his deep faith, healing abilities, and care for the sick. During a period of Christian persecution, Blaise fled to the wilderness, where he lived in prayer and solitude. Despite his seclusion, he continued to heal both people and animals, drawing others to Christ through his compassion. Captured by Roman authorities, he was tortured and executed for refusing to renounce his faith. St. Blaise became especially venerated for the miraculous healing of a boy choking on a fishbone, inspiring the tradition of the Blessing of the Throats on his feast day, February 3rd.

Practical Lessons:

  1. Be Prepared to Help in Unexpected Moments: St. Blaise healed a choking boy even while in prison. You never know when someone will need your help—whether it’s comforting a friend, assisting a stranger, or responding to an emergency. Stay ready to act with kindness.
  2. Care for Both Body and Soul: Blaise healed both physical illnesses and spiritual wounds. In daily life, this means taking care of your health through proper rest, diet, and exercise while also making time for prayer, reflection, and the sacraments.
  3. Stand Firm in Your Faith, Even When It’s Difficult: St. Blaise remained faithful under persecution. Today, this might mean standing up for your beliefs in the workplace, at school, or among friends, even when it’s unpopular or uncomfortable.

Prayer:

St. Blaise, faithful bishop and martyr, you showed compassion to the sick and courage in the face of persecution. Intercede for us, that we may grow in faith, serve others with love, and remain steadfast in our trust in God. Protect us from all illness, especially ailments of the throat, and help us use our voices to glorify the Lord. Amen.
