Exceptionally gifted, he earned a doctorate in law at just 16 years old and built a successful legal career. Yet, after losing an important case, Alphonsus discerned God was calling him to a different path. He abandoned his law practice and was ordained a priest in 1726. As a preacher, he became known for his clarity, warmth, and compassion, focusing on God’s mercy rather than fear.
In 1732, Alphonsus founded the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer (the Redemptorists), dedicated to serving the poor and neglected, especially in rural areas. His preaching missions reached countless people who had little access to the sacraments. Alphonsus was also a prolific writer, leaving behind devotional works, hymns, and books of moral theology. His classic The Glories of Mary reflects his deep Marian devotion, and his pastoral approach to moral theology emphasized mercy and practical guidance.
Despite suffering from poor health and arthritis later in life, Alphonsus continued to write, teach, and guide souls. He was canonized in 1839 and declared a Doctor of the Church in 1871 for his contributions to theology and spirituality. Today, he is the patron saint of confessors and moral theologians.
Practical Lessons
- Keep Learning and Growing: Alphonsus went from lawyer to priest, showing us it’s never too late to change paths when God calls. In daily life, this can mean taking a new course, exploring a career shift, or finding ways to grow spiritually when our plans change.
- Meet People Where They Are: Alphonsus preached in villages and towns that others overlooked. His example reminds us to look around at the people who need our time—an elderly neighbor, a struggling coworker, or a family member who feels unseen—and to be present for them.
- Use Your Talents for Good: Alphonsus used his skills as a writer and musician to build up the faith of others. Today, we can use our talents—whether in writing, cooking, organizing, or teaching—to encourage and lift up those around us.
