The Second Look Project, an educational initiative of the US Conference of Catholic Bishops' Pro-Life Secretariat, has launched a new ad campaign in the Washington, DC area to dispel myths about Roe v. Wade. The Second Look Project invites the public to reconsider the scope of abortion law in the United States, asking: "Have we gone too far?"
New ads from the Second Look Project are now posted in buses and trains throughout the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority system. This campaign coincides with the 34th anniversary of the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision that legalized abortion nationwide.
"The Second Look Project provides accurate information about the legal status of abortion in the United States," said Deirdre McQuade, USCCB pro-life spokeswoman, who oversees the Second Look Project.
One ad, for example, states: "The human heart begins to beat at 22 days. Roe v. Wade says a doctor can stop it for the next 244."
"As the Supreme Court deliberates the constitutionality of partial-birth abortion in 2007, many Americans are not aware that the inhumane partial-birth abortion method remains legal throughout the country," Ms. McQuade said. "The federal partial-birth abortion ban of 2003 has never been allowed to take effect," she explained.
The ads direct viewers to a website with more information on Roe v. Wade, as well as radio ads, interactive fetal development calendars, and facts about partial-birth abortion at www.secondlook.org. The Second Look Project first mounted an ad campaign in the DC metro area in January 2005, and again last January in both Washington, DC and San Francisco.
