"We ought not display the wares of sex outside marriage, it belongs to the spouse to see our nakedness, not to the people on the beach or on the bus."
Old fashioned? Maybe. Valid today? Absolutely. These words of philosopher Dr. William Marra are just part of the wisdom found in the new book Saving Christian Marriage just published by the Wanderer Forum Foundation.
"Valuable" is the word used by Bishop Thomas Doran of the Diocese of Rockford, Illinois, to describe the book, especially in light of the fact "some aspects of our Catholic doctrine do not change."
Saving Christian Marriage is taken from the presentations at the National Wanderer Forum, "The Splendor of Christian Marriage." Solidly Catholic speakers such as Dr. Marra who taught at Fordham University, Bishop Godfrey Okoye of Nigeria, Dr. William Marshner now of Christendom College, London's Christopher Derrick, Msgr. Alphonse Popek of Milwaukee, and noted pro-life writer and constitutionalist Charles E. Rice, examined varying aspects of the vocation of marriage. They spoke about the beauty of holiness that can be found in Christian Marriage, they spoke of the temptations facing married people in any time, any age.
With a no-holds-barred approach, these writers dealt plainly with adultery, contraception, and abortion. To their ranks two contemporary authors, veteran journalist Frank Morriss and Catholic Exchange's own James Bemis, brought current topics — same-sex union and divorce — into the picture. At the same time, the reader is given inspiration to attain the ideal, a marriage based in Christ Jesus.
