(AgapePress) – Education experts say there is a “culture war” going on in America’s public schools, and home-schooling is increasingly being seen as the best alternative.
Christian parents have long known that home schooling could provide the best preparation for their children. Scott Somerville, an attorney with the Home School Legal Defense Association says for years, home schoolers fought against a negative, false stereotype –but now home school success is beginning to crop up in mainstream news reports.
“The first of wave of home schoolers have been extraordinarily successful,” Somerville says. “Fox News reports them as being ‘self-reliant and focused,’ and says ‘Many home-schooled young adults say that being freed from the rigidity and conformity of high school allowed them to explore their individuality, creativity, and independence'.”
“We’re certainly trying to raise that [sic] kinds of kids,” he says. “It’s nice to see the secular news folks recognizing that.”
However, Somerville notes that there are some who continue to fight the home-school movement. “We’ve been all abuzz here with a liberal Stanford political science professor who’s calling for the regulation of home schooling,” he says. “And his reason for it is, he is clearly afraid home schoolers are going to raise children who actually believe in traditional values — and so he’s trying to mandate some sort of government regulation to make sure we don’t raise some young absolutists.”
Somerville says opposition will remain because some in the traditional education field see home schooling as a threat.
