Isaiah 45:22
Turn to me and be saved, all the ends of the earth! For I am God, and there is no other.
C.S. Lewis’ Uncle Screwtape remarks that one of the most reliable facets of fallen human character is our horror of the Same Old Thing. One Same Old Thing that the Faith proclaims is the obvious (and therefore, in our confused culture, difficult) fact that there is only one God. It seems like a no-brainer to say that, yet our relativist and subjectivist culture can’t bear to hear it. God is, in such a culture “what’s true for me”. In Scripture, God is. Full stop. What you or I would like him to be doesn’t matter one bit. We have to take reality as it comes to us, not gas about what we would have liked. That seems like a harsh note (since we fear we know that God is harsh and merciless). But in reality, it is good news. For the God that is desires our salvation, not our harm. And that means the ends of the earth can turn to him and find the exact same mercy no matter where, when or what. Today, turn to the God who is and receive his mercy. He is the same yesterday, today, and forever.
