Do you remember those days when watching TV was such a wonderful family activity — when our parents would sit down with us and we would all enjoy watching television together? Wasn’t that great?
Television programs back then showed loving families and intact marriages and talked about the simple joys of life in a moral and decent way.
Sadly though, things have drastically changed. Current programming is filled with violence, sexual content, vulgar language, disrespect for authority and other questionable behavior. Even immoral lifestyles are glamorized.
I was embarrassed whenever I watched television with my kids because you get a lot of surprises. Sexual content plagues prime-time TV and offensive commercials corrupt even the harmless programming.
A study made by the Parents Television Council revealed that from 8:00-9:00 PM, traditionally designated as the family hour, 157 sexual situations, 68 uses of foul language and 67 violent incidents pervade all major networks. Isn’t that disturbing?
My wife and I were definitely not comfortable with what we saw on television. We were not confident about the message television is feeding our kids. A lot of the parents we have spoken to felt the same way, and you probably do, too.
However, we also realized that discarding television was not the solution. We know that our kids will be exposed to it in one way or the other. Plus, television per se is not the culprit. It’s what is on television that is the problem. With the right programs, television is very effective in instructing, encouraging and inspiring. The dilemma was finding programming that supports our Christian values while not being 24 hours of religious programming. We wanted to be entertained without leaving God behind.
Fortunately, our search didn’t take very long. We discovered Familyland® Television Network, the television ministry of the Apostolate for Family Consecration®. Familyland® Television Network combines a variety of spiritual programming and family values-based entertainment.
With Familyland TV®, our family gets treated to wholesome family sit-coms like Ozzie and Harriet, Make Room for Daddy, Loretta Young, Bonanza and Roy Rogers. The kids particularly like Meet My Friend, Discovery Jones, and Davey and Goliath. My wife loves the practical home shows like At Home with Arlene (cooking show), P. Allen Smith Gardens and Sue Warden’s Creative Décor. I look forward to watching Sportsweek, Today’s Homeowner and Business Week. Familyland TV® also features several family-oriented movies to keep us company during the weekends.
Our family gets spiritually fed with shows like the Family Covenant, Family Unity in Today’s World, Inside Vatican II and other exclusive family spiritual programs. Our prayer life gets the needed boost with programs like the Family Rosary, Chaplet of Divine Mercy, Be Not Afraid Family Hours and the daily Mass. Programs like the Weekly Roman Observer, Ecclesia de Eucharistia and Sacrament of Redemption keep us up to date with the priorities and teachings of Pope John Paul II.
And, we love the inspiring Christian music and those snippets of wisdom from Holy Scripture, the Saints, Blessed Teresa of Calcutta, and Pope John Paul II. These help us live our day in God’s presence.
