Hollywood, CA There were times when you could literally count the number of pro-life Hollywood celebrities on one hand. While the number of pro-life notables such as Patricia Heaton, Mel Gibson or Ben Stein continues to grow, a survey by Talon News shows most of the money given by famous folks in Tinseltown continues to land in the pockets of pro-abortion groups or candidates.
Movie director Steven Speilberg is a ready source of cash for eager politicians. Since 1997, Speilberg, in soft money alone, has dished out in excess of $150,000. This year, directed $5,000 to Voters for Choice, $2,000 each to re-elect pro-abortion Congressmen Tom Lantos (D-CA) and Rahm Emanuel (D-IL), a close advisor to ex-President Bill Clinton.
Hollywood powerhouse Tom Cruise sent pro-abortion Sen. Barbara Boxer $1,000, which matches a gift he gave her the last time she ran. Boxer is up for re-election next year.
Disney executive Michael Eisner got into the action as well. He's sent money to pro-abortion Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-VT), pro-abortion Rep. Patrick Kennedy (D-RI), and pro-abortion Sen. Bob Graham (D-FL), who is running for president.
The queen of campaign contributions is easily Barbara Streisand. She sent Sen. Barbara Boxer $1,000 and $1,000 to several pro-abortion presidential candidates including Richard Gephart, Bob Graham, Howard Dean, John Kerry, John Edwards, and even sent in a contribution to Al Sharpton in May.
Meanwhile, Christie Hefner, of Playboy fame, contributed $1,500 to NARAL.
Other examples:
Former MASH star Mike Farrell sent money to three pro-abortion politicians: Howard Dean and John Kerry, who are running for president, and Sen. Herb Feingold (D-WI).
Mel Brooks, whose Broadway show “The Producers” has been a smashing success, sent pro-abortion Democratic president candidate Howard Dean a $2,000 check in June.
Gweneth Paltrow has also been liberal with her political fundraising and put $1,000 towards EMILY's List, the pro-abortion political action committee.
Susan Sarandon gave presidential candidate Howard Dean $1,000 in April.
Actress Janeane Garofolo gave $250 to EMILY's List, and $250 to Howard Dean.
Finally, actors James Cromwell, Hector Elizondo, Michael Gross, and Morgan Fairchild recently held a fundraiser for presidential candidate Dennis Kucinich, who upset pro-life advocates by changing his position from pro-life to pro-abortion.
Singer Bonnie Raitt, movie star Edward Norton, Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream founder Ben Cohen and controversial television host Jerry Springer all gave money to Kucinich's campaign. Kucinich also received contributions from folk singer Peter Yarrow and film stars Ben Affleck and Jeff Bridges. Larry Hagman, television star of “Dallas” and “I Dream of Jeannie,” gave him $500. “Dharma and Greg” star Mimi Kennedy gave him $450, and actor Eric Roberts, $375.
