Horses are fascinating animals. Since we are
so familiar seeing horses carrying cowboys, soldiers or weekend leisure riders
in the saddle, racing on the track, or competing in shows, it's easy to forget
their wild heritage. We asked our test families to check out videos about both
sides of the story; videos that depict these majestic, beautiful animals in
their own element and hard at work for their human owners.
The LaClairs were among those happy to oblige. “This was an enjoyable viewing
experience for us all,” said Peggy about their selection of “National Velvet.”
“Ryan (12) liked the movie and was interested in knowing when it was made. He
enjoyed seeing all the famous actors when they were young. Rachel (9) was very
enthusiastic, even getting up and encouraging the horse to win the race at the
end.”
The LaClairs have personal experience with horses. “We have been on horseback
and to a fair to see the horses race,” Peggy commented. “All the kids once got
a chance to sit on the back of a Percheron, too. We also own and take care of
our own standard bred trotter. She is only two years old, just learning and
growing. She had the summer off from the track and spent it running around our
backyard. We all liked having her here,” Peggy added.
For a galloping good time for the entire family, check your local library and
video stores for the following horse-themed videos.
“The Black Stallion” (ages 4-up)
After a shipwreck, young Alec is stranded alone on a deserted island, or so
he thought. He soon befriends a gorgeous, wild black stallion that becomes his
loyal companion. When the two are at last rescued and taken home, Alec and a
dedicated trainer transform the stallion into a glorious racehorse.
“My Friend Flicka” (ages 5-up)
In this classic, a young Roddy McDowell is eager to train a young colt on his
family's Colorado ranch. He doesn't care that the horse's mother has a history
of being difficult. With patience, dedication and love, the boy prevails and
gains a lifelong friend.
“National Velvet” (rated G, ages 5-up)
Twelve-year-old Velvet Brown (Elizabeth Taylor) is determined to enter her horse,
Pie, in the Grand National Steeplechase. She works hard to train Pie, getting
help from an ex-jockey (Mickey Rooney). She even disguises herself as a boy
so she can ride Pie in the big race.
“In Focus: Horses” (Stage Fright Productions, distributed by Penton Overseas,
ages 2-up) This wonderful video shows horses at play in their natural environment.
The crisp live-action footage is accompanied only by natural sound effects,
so you'll feel like you're part of the action.
“The Little Horse That Could: The Connemara Stallion-Erin Go Bragh” (Dreams
Come True Productions, ages 6-up)
Meet Erin Go Bragh, the Irish stallion that narrates this video. As you watch
the great horse action, Erin Go Bragh tells the story of how he became a champion.
The soundtrack, all Irish music, evokes emotion.
