Frequently Asked Questions about the Catholic Exchange Cruise

Why go on a Catholic Exchange/Catholic Scripture Study cruise?

If you’ve never been on a cruise, we invite you to join us on a voyage of a lifetime, with the added blessing of learning more about your Catholic faith from some of the favorite teachers and writers in the Catholic world. You’ll sail on a luxurious, comfortable ship to some of the most breathtaking scenery in the world, in the company of fellow Catholics, with the opportunity for daily Mass, discussion groups, seminars, and exciting onshore excursions.

If you’re an experienced cruiser, you already know how refreshing and relaxing a week aboard a luxury cruise liner can be. Now combine that with a spiritual and inspiring series of discussions and studies with dynamic speakers like Steve Ray and Patrick Madrid, and you have a cruise vacation unlike any other!

Why Holland America Lines?

Catholic Exchange and Catholic Scripture Study chose the Holland America Zaandam as the host ship for our cruise because of its superlative reputation among discerning cruise-goers and travel professionals. Holland America Lines is widely regarded as one of the most family-friendly and wholesome cruise lines available. Rather than appealing to a rowdy “Love Boat” crowd, they seek more a refined and mature clientele who appreciate the civilized things in life. For example, our ship, the Zaandam, has a musical theme, and is decorated throughout with antique and collectible musical instruments. In keeping with this theme, classical musicians perform live during many of the dinners on board.

You’ll be impressed by the high standard of service from your crew, as they strive to accommodate your every need. While you’re enjoying the ever-changing vistas from a deck chair or your private balcony, the crew will be hard at work keeping the ship and your cabin immaculately clean, while the European-trained chefs prepare meals worthy of a four-star restaurant. The Holland America Zaandam is truly a seagoing resort of the highest quality.

Why cruise to Alaska?

Anyone who has been privileged to experience the majestic beauty of the largest and most unspoiled US state already knows the answer to this one. For those who have never visited Alaska, you can forget those cartoons of igloos and blizzards. The Alaska Inside Passage in our month of August enjoys a comfortable temperate climate, with nothing heavier than a sweater or light jacket needed, even in the evening. And did I mention the evenings? During the Alaskan summer, the sun doesn’t set until after 9pm, and with a little cooperation from the atmosphere, you may glimpse the brilliant Northern Lights glimmering above the rugged mountains. Optional shore excursions include whale watching, kayaking, shopping, salmon bakes, and helicopter rides to the glaciers. As we sail past emerald forests and hidden fishing villages, you’ll wonder why you waited so long to see the “Last Frontier.”

Isn’t a cruise expensive?

When you look over the cabin rates, be sure to consider all that’s included in that one price. Your cruise fare includes seven nights accommodation in your spacious cabin, three delicious restaurant meals a day, use of the ship’s facilities including sun decks, hot tubs, fitness center, and a movie theater with free popcorn! Our low price includes the fees that some cruise promotions add on later, like taxes and dock fees. In addition, all of the exclusive Catholic Exchange events are included, including seminars, conferences, cocktail parties, and casual chat time with your speakers. When you compare a cruise fare that includes all of the above with what you’d pay on a land-based vacation for hotel, dining out, car/gas/taxis, etc, you’ll find a cruise is a great value!

Is this cruise recommended for Catholic families?

We’ve designed the Catholic Exchange/Catholic Scripture Study cruise to be family-friendly, and we hope parents will bring their children of all ages. There are children’s programs and babysitting available. This cruise is an ideal multi-generational family vacation where grandparents, parents, and kids can all find activities to enjoy together or separately.

How many people per cabin? Can children stay in their parents’ rooms?

Single occupancy rates are also available. We offer special rates for children under 18, as well as infants under two years old. Children under 25 must share a room with at least one adult.

How about baby cribs?

Holland America Line offers cribs to clients upon request at no charge.

Are adjoining or connecting rooms available?

Yes there are cabins that are adjoining; however, availability is limited.

Is the ship safe?

We took extra care to choose a cruise line and destination that promises a safe and carefree journey. Holland America is one of the highest-rated cruise lines in hygiene and cleanliness. The ship is designed so all ages and levels of mobility can get around comfortably. And our voyage will take us from Seattle to Alaska and Canada, all safe and secure ports. Anyone can join this cruise and travel with complete peace of mind!
