Washington, DC — Pro-life state Rep. Tony Perkins, a Louisiana Republican, has been named as the new president of the Family Research Council.
As one of the leading pro-life organizations on Capitol Hill, FRC found itself looking for a new face following the departure of Ken Connor, an attorney and the former president of Florida Right to Life. Connor replaced longtime FRC president Gary Bauer, who left to run for the presidency in 2000.
Perkins is serving the final year of his second term in the Louisiana House of Representatives where he has been one of the state's most vocal pro-life advocates.
Perkins authored legislation making Louisiana one of the first states in the nation to provide comprehensive regulation of abortion clinics. The legislation was credited with shutting down at least one abortion facility and places many restrictions on abortion businesses that will hit their pocketbooks and provide a safer environment for women who have abortions.
“I am honored to have been asked to lead the country's premier public policy organization dedicated to strengthening the family and defending the sanctity of life,” Perkins said of the announcement.
Perkins is praised by pro-life advocates who know him and his accomplishments.
“The Board of Directors of the Family Research Council hit a home run in its selection of Perkins,” said Gary Bauer.
Pro-life attorney Dorinda Bordlee, in the New Orleans office of Americans United for Life, said FRC is gaining a “world-class leader.”
“Tony Perkins' style of sophisticated leadership has been key in passing pro-life and pro-family measures in the Louisiana Legislature,” Bordlee told LifeNews.com.
