Dedication of the Basilica of St. Mary Major

The Dedication of St. Mary Major recalls a miracle of trust and obedience. In the heat of August, snow fell upon Rome, marking where the Virgin Mary desired a church. Built in faith after this sign, the basilica reminds us that God often guides through the unexpected. When we listen with open hearts, even the impossible becomes a path forward.

The Dedication of the Basilica of St. Mary Major is celebrated on August 5th. This feast recalls the consecration of the largest church in Rome dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary. Built in the 5th century after the Council of Ephesus (431 AD) declared Mary as Theotokos (Mother of God), the basilica stands as a testimony to the Church’s love and devotion to Our Lady.

According to tradition, the Virgin Mary appeared in a dream to Pope Liberius and a wealthy Roman couple, instructing them to build a church in her honor. As a sign, snow miraculously fell on the Esquiline Hill in Rome on August 5th, in the height of summer. The Pope traced the outline of the church in the snow, and construction began. This miraculous event gave the basilica its other name, Our Lady of the Snows.

Throughout history, St. Mary Major has remained a central site of Marian devotion. Popes have turned to Mary there in prayer during times of need, and pilgrims continue to venerate her under this title. The basilica also safeguards the relics of the manger of Bethlehem, connecting devotion to Mary with the birth of her Son, Jesus.

Practical Lessons

  1. Make Space for Mary in Your Home: Just as Rome honored Mary with a basilica, we can honor her by creating a small prayer corner at home with an image, rosary, or candle. This can be a reminder to turn to her for guidance each day.
  2. Respond to God’s Signs Promptly: The Pope and the Roman couple acted immediately after the miraculous snowfall. In our lives, when we sense God nudging us through prayer, Scripture, or circumstances, we should respond without delay.
  3. Celebrate Faith in Simple Ways: The miracle of snow in summer was a sign of God’s presence. We can recognize and celebrate small “miracles” daily—answered prayers, unexpected blessings, or quiet moments of peace—and give thanks for them.

Prayer to Our Lady, Honored in St. Mary Major

O Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, who desired to be honored on the Esquiline Hill with the Basilica of St. Mary Major, intercede for us. Help us to welcome your Son into our hearts and homes with faith and love. May we, like you, be ready to say yes to God’s will and live as faithful witnesses of His mercy. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
