Christ is our Sign of Favor

Matthew 24:23-24

Then if any one says to you, ‘Lo, here is the Christ!’ or ‘There he is!’ do not believe it. For false Christs and false prophets will arise and show great signs and wonders, so as to lead astray, if possible, even the elect.

We can spend our lives looking for signs of God’s love in the wind and weather or in this or that Big Shot.  And to be sure, God does buck us up from time to time with clear signs of his love when we are weak or with special people who mediate the grace of God to us.  But if we pin all our hopes on how our luck is running today or on the approval of some human being, we go wrong.  For it is not true that God has abandoned us when we are sick, dying, oppressed, out of work, unpopular or what not.  The Great Sign of God’s love is not in any of these happenstances.  It is in Christ Jesus our Lord who was crucified and raised for us.  If you want to know if God loves you, look there above all.  Nothing can separate you from that love.
