Book Review: My Sixty Seconds

God’s Sacred Scripture and prayer are very personal and vital to Deborah Knapp, author of the recently published book, My 60 Seconds. To know and believe God, Knapp relies on the Good News and a prayer filled lifestyle.

The psalmist says in Psalm 90:14 “Satisfy us in the morning with your unfailing love, that we may sing for joy and be glad all our days”, and that is how Deborah Knapp begins every morning. Because Knapp hoped for the same daily prayer and scripture life for her children, she began writing a daily prayer journal for her youngest daughter to use in school. She had one goal in mind. Present God’s Sacred Word in such a manner that eyes would open to His wisdom and a heart would be consumed by the love of Jesus. She knew that in her own state of Texas, students were being given a “moment” to pray, reflect or work quietly. She wanted her daughter to use that moment to its greatest potential. When this mother began, she never dreamed of the plan God had in mind.

On July 2, with the Frio River and Texas Hill Country as the backdrop and immersed in Scripture to search for the wisdom children need, pen met the paper, and on July 22, My 60 Seconds was complete and ready for publication.

What was initially intended to be a handmade journal for one solitary middle schooler became a wonderful teaching tool for Christian parents &#0151 a way to introduce and continue to teach their children the wisdom of the Holy Spirit through Sacred Scripture.

My 60 Seconds contains a series of one minute daily devotionals for children. Each page includes a scripture verse from the Bible coupled with a prayer. Children are encouraged to continue personal dialogue with God through the lined space available at the bottom of every page. It provides an avenue for children to learn and experience what Knapp terms “God’s ways” and then immediately apply them to their lives through prayer. Each day offers a new holy wisdom to explore and enjoy – to value and know as truth. Concise and age-appropriate, children are able to comprehend and understand each reflection. My 60 Seconds offers spiritual advice from both the Old and New Testaments and topics range from love to faith, obedience to forgiveness, instruction to the reassurance of His unfailing love and awesome power and sovereignty.

My 60 Seconds encourages and teaches our children to pray for all things – help, forgiveness, and blessings – thanking and praising Him for all He was yesterday, all He is today, and all He is for eternity. It even answers many of the questions each of us has experienced at some point in our lives: Does God know who I am? What does God want from me? Do I have a purpose? Is God near to me? Can God do anything? Is obedience really important to God? Am I special? Will God forgive me? Does God have a plan for me? Does God hear me?

It is the deepest desire of the author that our children know the Triune God &#0151 the heavenly Father who loves us, the precious Son who died for us, and the Holy Spirit who dwells within us. She hopes that they come to know a deeper relationship with our mighty God.
