The inaugural unveiling of a commissioned portrait of Pope John Paul II by world-renowned American master artist Ruth Mayer took place November 20 in Rome, Italy.
Ruth Mayer's painting of the life of the Holy Father, entitled Song of a Beautiful Soul, was commissioned by the Ecclesial Family of Consecrated Life, Miles Jesu. The work was presented to the Holy Father by the artist and her husband during the Wednesday, November 17, 2004, General Audience at the Vatican.
The artist, Ruth Mayer, is a resident of California and a non-Catholic. For more than a year, she has dedicated her work to research and paint the life and ministry of Pope John Paul II, and will be donating proceeds from the painting to support Miles Jesu and their work with poor and abandoned children around the world.
The unveiling was the highlight of an evening in honor of the pontificate of His Holiness, Pope John Paul II. His Eminence, Alfonso Cardinal Lopez Trujillo, President of the Pontifical Council for the Family, was the Guest of Honor. Special guests included His Excellency, Mr. James Nicholson, Ambassador of the United States to the Holy See, and the Very Rev. Fr. Alphonsus Maria Duran, Founder and General Director of Miles Jesu.
