The project began when founder and publisher Tom Mammoser left his post as Director of Corporate Communications for the Walgreen Co. to launch a unique newsstand publication that would assist in revitalizing what has become an all too vulnerable institution, the family. With Becoming Family, he is introducing into the mainstream media the idea that “the family is the best place in which to face life’s challenges and experience its joys.”
Hundreds of Wal-Mart, Walgreens, Barnes & Noble, and Kroger stores across the country are stocking the magazine on their shelves.
Editor Peg Short, who adds nearly twenty years of experience as a writer, editor, and publishing executive to the team, explains, “Strong families don’t just happen. They require help, support, and real-life heroes.” Toward that end, Becoming Family shares the inspiring stories of families that are overcoming the natural obstacles of everyday life to develop happy, cohesive homes.
One such story is that of Jennifer Rothschild-—a singer, public speaker, and mother of two boys—-who has received through her loss of eyesight a greater appreciation for the gifts of marriage and children. Becoming Family hopes readers will be able to relate the hopes and challenges of these families to their own lives, and in the process find some of the encouragement and support that parents so deeply need.
Mammoser underlines the mission of this quarterly publication by saying, “We feel a clear philosophy and a supporting voice would greatly help recapture the values, beauty, dignity and joy of marriage and family life in America.”
In addition to introducing these “real-life heroes,” Becoming Family provides plenty of practical advice and creative ideas to guide parents.
Regular contributors include psychologist Dr. Ray Guarendi and family management specialist Kathy Peel. What’s more, Becoming Family possesses an attractive look and feel, with a large, beautiful layout as well as some very striking photography.
The magazine has already obtained plenty of enthusiastic reviews, including that of William J. Bennett, author of The Book of Virtues, who writes, “By defending our families and our children, we keep the aspirations of our nation alive. That’s why Becoming Family magazine is such an important publication.”
