DAILY DEVOTIONS, LIFELONG FAITH

St. Lawrence

Entrusted with the Church’s treasures, St. Lawrence gave everything to the poor, calling them the greatest riches of all. His fearless witness in persecution shows that faith is lived through generosity and courage, and that even in suffering, joy rooted in Christ can shine powerfully.

St. Lawrence was born in Spain around 225 AD and later became one of the seven deacons of Rome under Pope Sixtus II. As a deacon, he was entrusted with the care of the Church’s treasures and, more importantly, with serving the poor and needy. In 258, during the persecution of Christians under Emperor Valerian, Pope Sixtus II was arrested and executed along with several other deacons. Lawrence, knowing his own arrest was near, distributed the Church’s wealth to the poor so that the imperial authorities could not seize it. When ordered to hand over the Church’s treasures, Lawrence famously presented the poor, the sick, and the marginalized, declaring them the true treasures of the Church.

Lawrence was sentenced to death for his defiance. According to tradition, he was martyred by being roasted alive on a gridiron. Even in his suffering, he reportedly displayed remarkable courage and even a touch of humor, telling his executioners to turn him over as he was “done on this side.” His joyful faith in the face of suffering made a lasting impression on Christians of his time and earned him enduring veneration as one of the most beloved martyrs of the early Church. He died in Rome in 258, and his feast is celebrated on August 10.

Practical Lessons

  1. Serve the Poor Boldly: Lawrence’s care for the poor reminds us to put people before possessions. In our lives, this can mean donating to charity, volunteering at a food pantry, or simply helping a struggling neighbor instead of clinging to material wealth.
  2. Live with Courage and Joy: Even facing death, Lawrence showed remarkable courage and even humor. In daily life, we can practice facing difficulties—whether at work, in family struggles, or personal challenges—with a spirit of courage and, when possible, joy.
  3. Prioritize What Truly Matters: By calling the poor the treasures of the Church, Lawrence showed what God values most. For us, this means investing time and love into relationships, faith, and acts of service rather than being consumed by status or material success.

Prayer

St. Lawrence, faithful deacon and courageous martyr, intercede for us that we may learn to serve the poor with love, face our struggles with courage, and treasure what truly matters in God’s eyes. Help us to grow in generosity and to remain joyful even in times of trial, so that our lives may point others to Christ. Amen.
