DAILY DEVOTIONS, LIFELONG FAITH

Saint of the day

St. Marinus

Fleeing persecution, St. Marinus settled on Mount Titano and built more than stone—he built a community of faith that became San Marino. His life calls us to offer our work to God, live simply, and strengthen the bonds of faith and freedom in our own lives.

St. Marinus, traditionally regarded as the founder of San Marino, was born in the 3rd century on the island of Rab (modern-day Croatia). A Christian stonemason, he fled persecution under Emperor Diocletian and settled on Mount Titano in Italy. There he built a small chapel and lived a life of prayer, simplicity, and work. His holiness attracted followers, and the small community he founded eventually became the Republic of San Marino, one of the oldest republics in the world. Marinus is remembered not only as a saintly hermit but also as a figure who laid the foundations of a community rooted in faith, freedom, and simplicity. He died around the year 366, and his legacy lives on in both the Church and the nation that bears his name.

Practical Lessons

  1. Build Faith into Daily Work: St. Marinus was a stonemason who combined his craft with his devotion to God. In modern life, we can follow his example by offering our daily work—whether office tasks, household chores, or manual labor—to God as prayer.
  2. Live Simply and Faithfully: Marinus chose a humble life of simplicity on Mount Titano. Today, this can mean decluttering our lives, choosing time with family over constant busyness, and making space for prayer and reflection in the midst of daily routines.
  3. Create Communities of Faith: His small gathering of believers grew into something enduring. For us, this means taking steps to foster faith communities—inviting a friend to pray with us, supporting our parish, or making our homes places where Christ is welcomed.

Prayer

St. Marinus, humble servant of God and founder of a community rooted in faith, we ask for your intercession. Pray that we may integrate our faith into our daily work, live with simplicity, and foster communities centered on Christ’s love. May your example inspire us to build lives of holiness in the midst of the world. Amen.
