St. Thomas of Villanova was born in 1488 in Fuenllana, Spain, and raised in the nearby city of Villanueva de los Infantes, from which he later took his name. Known from a young age for his intelligence and charity, he studied at the University of Alcalá, where he became a professor of philosophy. Drawn to the Augustinian Order, he was ordained a priest and soon became famous as a powerful preacher with a gift for reaching both the educated and the poor. Appointed Archbishop of Valencia in 1544, Thomas devoted himself to reforming the clergy, strengthening education, and caring for the poor. He established hospitals, homes for orphans, and institutions to serve the marginalized. Despite his high office, Thomas lived simply, giving away much of his income to those in need. Called the “Father of the Poor,” he combined scholarly brilliance with a deep love for the least in society. St. Thomas of Villanova died in 1555, leaving behind a legacy of charity, reform, and devotion to God that continues to inspire the Church today.

- Give Generously: Thomas gave away nearly everything he owned to care for the poor. In everyday life, we can practice this by setting aside part of our income, even a small amount, for those in need, or by donating clothes, food, or time to local charities.
- Live Simply: Despite being an archbishop, Thomas lived a humble life. We can follow his example by resisting the pull of consumerism, choosing modesty over excess, and prioritizing people and faith over possessions.
- Prioritize Education and Service: Thomas valued learning and used it to strengthen the Church and society. We can put this into action by mentoring others, helping with homework or tutoring, or supporting Catholic schools and parish programs that form hearts and minds in the faith.
