St. John of Capistrano was born in 1386 in Capistrano, Italy. Trained as a lawyer, he served as governor of Perugia until political turmoil led him to a time of imprisonment. After his release, he discerned a call to religious life and entered the Franciscan Order, where he devoted himself to preaching and reform. Known as a fiery and persuasive preacher, John traveled across Europe, inspiring countless people to return to the practice of their faith. He was also a defender of the Church, working to combat heresy and strengthen Christian unity. In 1456, at the age of seventy, he helped rally Christian forces to victory at the Battle of Belgrade, a turning point against the Ottoman Turks. He died later that same year, remembered as a preacher of truth and a fearless defender of the faith. Canonized in 1724, he is honored as the patron saint of military chaplains and jurists.

Practical Lessons

  1. Embrace Second Chances: John’s life shifted dramatically after his imprisonment, showing that God can bring new purpose out of failure and hardship. In our lives, setbacks can become opportunities to listen for God’s call and start anew.
  2. Speak Truth Boldly: John used his preaching to draw people back to Christ and defend the Church. We, too, can witness to the truth by speaking with clarity and charity in our conversations, online presence, and daily choices.
  3. Defend the Faith with Courage: John stood firm against threats to the Church, both spiritual and physical. While most of us are not called to battle, we can defend our faith by living it authentically and not being afraid to let it guide our decisions.

Prayer

St. John of Capistrano, faithful preacher and defender of the Church, intercede for us that we may turn our setbacks into opportunities for grace, speak the truth with courage, and live our faith boldly in the face of challenges. Pray that we may remain steadfast in Christ and bring others to know His love. Amen.
