St. Olympias was born around 361 into a wealthy and noble family in Constantinople. Orphaned at a young age, she inherited great wealth but chose to devote her life to Christ rather than the comforts of high society. Married briefly and widowed soon after, Olympias refused all offers of remarriage, dedicating her resources to serving the poor, the sick, and the Church.
St Olympias became a deaconess, assisting in liturgical and charitable work, and was a close friend and supporter of St. John Chrysostom, offering him aid during his exile. Despite facing slander, persecution, and exile herself because of her loyalty to the faith, Olympias remained steadfast in prayer, charity, and service. She died around 408, remembered as a model of generosity, courage, and unwavering devotion to Christ.
Practical Lessons
- Use Gifts for God’s Glory: Olympias chose to use her wealth and influence not for herself, but to serve others. Whatever resources we have—time, money, or talents—can be dedicated to God through acts of charity and service.
- Stay Loyal in Hardship: Olympias remained faithful to St. John Chrysostom and to the Church even when it brought her suffering. In our lives, this means standing by our faith and our principles, even when it is unpopular or costly.
- Serve with Compassion: As a deaconess, Olympias cared for the poor and the sick with humility. We, too, are called to look for ways to serve in our families, parishes, and communities, bringing Christ’s love to those who suffer.
Prayer
St. Olympias, faithful servant of Christ and friend of the poor, intercede for us that we may use our gifts for God’s glory, remain steadfast in trials, and show compassion to those in need. Pray that our lives may be marked by generosity and courage, following your example of holiness. Amen.
