St. Polycarp was born around 69 AD and was a disciple of St. John the Apostle. As Bishop of Smyrna, he guided the early Church with wisdom, defending the faith against heresies and strengthening Christian communities facing persecution. He traveled to Rome to settle disputes on Church practices, always seeking unity among believers. In 155 AD, Polycarp was arrested and ordered to renounce Christ, but he refused, proclaiming his lifelong faithfulness to God. He was sentenced to be burned at the stake, but when the flames did not consume him, he was ultimately killed by the sword. His steadfastness in the face of death made him one of the most revered martyrs of the early Church.
