We live in a time marked by war, terrorism, and political upheaval. An unprecedented social, moral, and spiritual crisis looms over the world today. Societies grapple with moral relativism, and the sanctity of life and family is under threat.
There is no purely human solution to the problems we face.
More than 100 years ago, Our Lady of Fatima appeared to a world similarly shaken by war and unrest—with a message of hope and Heaven’s solution. Her words, as urgent now as they were then, offer light for our times.
Here are five vital lessons from Fatima that speak prophetically to our world today:
1. “Whether there is peace or war depends on the practice of this devotion.”
Our Lady made two specific requests at Fatima: that the Holy Father consecrate Russia to her Immaculate Heart—a request fulfilled by Pope St. John Paul II on March 25, 1984—and that each person individually consecrate themselves to her Immaculate Heart through the Five First Saturdays Devotion.
In 1925, Our Lady appeared to Sister Lucia, accompanied by the Child Jesus, and said:
My daughter, look at My Heart, surrounded with thorns with which ungrateful men pierce it at every moment by their blasphemies and ingratitude. You, at least, make sure to console me and announce that all those who, on the first Saturday of five consecutive months, go to Confession, receive Communion, say five decades of the Rosary, and keep me company for 15 minutes meditating on the mysteries of the Rosary, with the intention of making reparation to me—I promise to assist them at the hour of death with all the graces necessary for the salvation of their souls.
Our Lady’s First Saturdays request at Fatima—centered on Confession, Adoration, Rosary, Eucharist, and Sacrifice—can be remembered with the simple acronym C.A.R.E.S. It embodies the most foundational, essential pillars of the Catholic Faith.
To practice the Five First Saturdays is simply to live faithfully as a Catholic. Our Lady asks that each of us live a lifestyle of C.A.R.E.S., but even if we cannot practice it everyday—she says that even five consecutive Saturdays would suffice.
This devotion is so powerful that Our Lady promised: “Whether there is peace or war depends on the practice of this devotion.”
The First Saturdays Devotion is “Heaven’s peace plan.” Our Blessed Mother stated:
If my requests are heeded, Russia will be converted, and there will be peace. If not, she will spread her errors throughout the world, causing wars and persecutions of the Church. The good will be martyred; the Holy Father will have much to suffer; various nations will be annihilated.
The first part of her request—the consecration of Russia—has already been fulfilled. But the second part, involving each one of us, remains.
Are we doing our part?
2. “The last battle between the Lord and the reign of Satan will be about marriage and the family.”
Sister Lucia of Fatima warned that the final battle would concern marriage and the family. Today, we see this prophecy unfolding in real time.
We witness grievous attacks on the family through the promotion and normalization of divorce, abortion, same-sex unions, and gender ideology.
Children grow up without the presence of both a mother and a father. Society is normalizing structures that deviate from God’s design for the family. Gender ideology teaches that there is no such thing as male and female—that gender is “fluid,” with as many identities as letters in the alphabet.
The sanctity of life is attacked through abortion, which is falsely proclaimed as “healthcare,” “female empowerment,” or “bodily autonomy.” Mothers are led to believe that the murder of a child in her womb is a “right.”
At Fatima, Our Lady warned of these attacks. She said: “More souls go to hell for sins of the flesh than for any other reason.”
We are witnessing what she foretold.
3. “If men only knew what eternity is, they would do everything in their power to change their lives.”
During the July 13, 1917, apparition, Our Lady showed the three children a terrifying vision of hell. She said:
You have seen hell, where the souls of poor sinners go. To save them, God wishes to establish in the world devotion to my Immaculate Heart. If what I say is done, many souls will be saved, and there will be peace.
Fr. Gabriele Amorth, Rome’s former chief exorcist, once said that the devil’s greatest lie is to make people believe he doesn’t exist and that hell doesn’t exist.
Today’s world has lost its sense of sin and of eternal consequence. Throughout the centuries, saints have described that the torment and pain experienced in hell are far greater and more intense than any suffering imaginable on Earth, and that the soul will feel it—not for 5, 10, or even 20 years—but for all eternity.
This is why Our Lady of Fatima had said: “If men only knew what eternity is, they would do everything in their power to change their lives.”
This is a sobering reminder of the urgency of conversion. The stakes are eternal.
4. “There is no problem, I tell you, no matter how difficult it is, that we cannot resolve by the prayer of the Holy Rosary.”
The Rosary is the most powerful spiritual weapon of our time. In every apparition since the 1900s, Our Lady has urged its daily recitation.
She told the children at Fatima:
Continue to say the Rosary every day in honor of Our Lady of the Rosary, to obtain the peace of the world and the end of the war, because only She can obtain it.
The Rosary has worked miracles throughout history:
- In 1955, after years of national Rosary crusades, Soviet troops withdrew from Austria without a single drop of blood.
- During World War II, Jesuit priests survived the atomic bombing of Hiroshima—just one kilometer from ground zero—attributing their miraculous survival to daily Rosary prayers.
- In the Battle of Lepanto in 1571, a Christian fleet defeated the Ottoman Empire after Pope Pius V called all of Europe to pray the Rosary.
Sister Lucia of Fatima emphasized: “There is no problem, no matter how difficult it is—whether temporal or above all spiritual, in the personal life of each one of us or of our families . . . that cannot be solved by the Rosary.”
We do not need better policies or better politicians—we need divine intervention. And Our Lady gave us the key.
5. “Pray much and make sacrifices for sinners, for many souls go to hell because there are none to sacrifice and pray for them.”
Even if you are old, sick, or confined to a bed, you still have something precious to offer. Suffering, when united to Christ, becomes powerful intercession.
The three shepherd children of Fatima offered many sacrifices, all for the conversion of sinners:
- They went entire days without drinking water.
- They gave their lunches to the poor.
- They tied ropes around their waists as penance.
Our Lady eventually told them:
God is pleased with your sacrifices, but He does not want you to wear the cords to bed. Keep them on during the day.
They did all this joyfully. Meanwhile, we struggle to fast from a meal or offer up small inconveniences.
Our days are filled with potential sacrifices. Our Lady of Fatima asks us to offer up the sacrifices demanded by our daily duties, as well as whatever hardships and difficulties God permits in our lives.
Our Lady told the children at Fatima to “pray much and make sacrifices for sinners, for many souls go to hell because there are none to sacrifice and pray for them.”
God works through our prayers, and sacrifice is the fuel of prayer.
You can have the most beautiful car and the most glorious destination, but without fuel, the car goes nowhere. In the same way, you can say many prayers, but without sacrifice, our prayers cannot reach heaven.
“Make sacrifices for sinners,” Our Lady said, “and say often, especially while making a sacrifice: ‘O Jesus, this is for love of Thee, for the conversion of sinners, and in reparation for the offenses committed against the Immaculate Heart of Mary.’”
At Fatima, Our Lady asked: “Will you offer yourselves to God and bear all the sufferings He sends you—in atonement for the sins that offend Him, and for the conversion of sinners?”
The children answered, “We will.”
And so must we.
Our Lady’s Call Today
More than a century ago, Our Lady of Fatima appeared to a world engulfed in war and unrest—with a message of hope. Now, in this Jubilee of Hope, 100 years since she and the Child Jesus requested the First Saturdays Devotion, her call remains as urgent as ever.
The message of Fatima is not a relic of the past, but a prophecy unfolding in real time. We are the generation standing at the edge of a great spiritual battle. Our Lady did not appear to theologians, bishops, or world leaders. She came to three poor shepherd children. Why? To show that Heaven’s plan doesn’t depend on the powerful, but on the willing. She is waiting for our “Yes.”
Let us fulfill Our Blessed Mother’s request.
