St. Mary Salome was one of the faithful women who followed Christ during His public ministry. She was the mother of the Apostles James and John, often called the “sons of Zebedee.” Tradition holds that she was present at the Crucifixion, standing near the Cross with Mary, the Mother of Jesus, and that she went to the tomb on Easter morning with spices to anoint the Lord’s body. Instead of finding His body, she and the other women were greeted by the angel who proclaimed the Resurrection. Mary Salome’s quiet but steadfast discipleship shows the importance of perseverance, family faith, and trust in Christ even in moments of sorrow and uncertainty.
Practical Lessons
- Be Faithful in the Ordinary: Mary Salome followed Jesus as a disciple not through public preaching but through quiet service and steadfast presence. This reminds us that faithfulness in daily tasks—caring for family, supporting others, or small acts of devotion—pleases God greatly.
- Stay Near the Cross: Mary Salome did not abandon Christ during His Passion but remained close to Him at the foot of the Cross. In our own struggles, we too can draw near to Jesus in prayer, the sacraments, and acts of love, rather than turning away in despair.
- Carry Hope into Darkness: By going to the tomb with spices, Mary Salome showed courage and love, even when all seemed lost. In our lives, this calls us to persevere in faith and charity, trusting that God can bring resurrection and hope from even the darkest situations.
Prayer
St. Mary Salome, faithful disciple of the Lord, pray for us that we may be constant in our daily duties, steadfast in times of trial, and hopeful in moments of darkness. Intercede that we may follow Christ with love and courage, staying close to Him through every cross and sharing in the joy of His Resurrection. Amen.
