St. John Joseph of the Cross

St. John Joseph of the Cross was born in 1654 on the island of Ischia, near Naples, Italy. Drawn to a life of holiness from a young age, he joined the Franciscan Order of the Strict Observance, a branch of the Franciscans that emphasized deep poverty and intense devotion. He quickly became known for his humility, self-discipline, and spirit of service. Despite his desire for solitude, he was called to leadership roles, where he guided others with wisdom and compassion. Known for his miracles and ability to read hearts, he spent his life in prayer, service, and sacrifice, bringing many souls closer to God. St. John Joseph of the Cross died in 1739 and was canonized in 1839.

Practical Lessons:

  1. Lead by Example: Even when he was placed in leadership positions, St. John Joseph remained humble and focused on serving others. If you find yourself in a position of influence—whether at work, in family life, or in ministry—focus on serving rather than controlling.
  2. Practice Self-Discipline in Daily Life: He embraced simplicity and sacrifice. While extreme penances aren’t necessary, small acts of self-discipline—such as limiting screen time, waking up earlier for prayer, or being more patient with others—help build a stronger spiritual life.
  3. Stay Attuned to Others’ Needs: St. John Joseph could “read hearts,” not because of supernatural power alone but because he was deeply present to those around him. Take time to listen carefully to others—whether a family member, friend, or coworker—offering them your full attention and compassion.

Prayer:

St. John Joseph of the Cross, you embraced humility, discipline, and service with unwavering faith. Pray for us, that we may lead with humility, live with self-discipline, and be attentive to the needs of those around us. Help us to seek God’s will in all things and to grow in holiness through our daily actions. Amen.
