St. Anthony Mary Zaccaria

St. Anthony Mary Zaccaria

Saint Anthony Mary Zaccaria, born in 1502 in Cremona, Italy, dedicated his life to revitalizing the faith and promoting Christian values. Ordained as a priest at the age of 26, Anthony was deeply moved by the need for spiritual renewal and social reform within the Church and society.

In 1530, Anthony founded the Clerics Regular of St. Paul, also known as the Barnabites, named after the church of St. Barnabas in Milan. This religious congregation focused on preaching, teaching, and administering the sacraments with a special emphasis on the Eucharist and devotion to the Crucified Christ. He also founded the Angelic Sisters of St. Paul for women and a lay association, the Laity of St. Paul, to support his mission.

Anthony’s ministry was marked by his fervent preaching, tireless pastoral care, and innovative reforms. He advocated for frequent reception of the sacraments, particularly the Eucharist and confession, and emphasized the importance of personal piety and active charity. His efforts significantly contributed to the Counter-Reformation, addressing the spiritual and moral decline of the time.

Despite facing resistance from those opposed to his reforms, Anthony persevered with humility and determination. He worked tirelessly to spread his vision of a renewed, vibrant faith, inspiring many to deepen their relationship with God and serve their communities.
