Theodora, the Empress consort of Justinian I, sought to install the deacon Vigilius as Pope, maneuvering to depose Silverius. Under false pretenses, Silverius was accused of treason and deposed from the papacy in 537 AD.
Despite his unjust removal from office, Silverius remained resolute in his commitment to the Catholic faith. Exiled to the island of Palmarola, he endured harsh conditions with unwavering faith and humility.
